Is A Polyester Rug Right For You?

Your home is a special place. It is where you spend a considerable amount of your time and therefore it can have a massive impact on your mood, energy levels and mental wellbeing.

So, it stands to reason that when buying the things that will furnish your home you want to make the best, most informed decisions possible. Every time you add something to your home it helps you build the atmosphere you are aiming for. This could be anything from a creative, artistic space that helps inspire you to a chilled Scandi styled room that emanates tranquillity and helps you relax and recover after a hard day.

In this guide, we are going to help you pick the right rug for your home by offering you some advice on the materials available, with a special focus on the upsides and downsides of polyester rugs.

Picking a Rug

Before you choose the perfect rug to suit your home there are plenty of factors to consider:

  • What size should it be?

  • What colour and pattern should I go for?

  • Should it be modern and bold, or classic and chic?

By far one of the most important factors that is often overlooked is the material your rug is made from. The fibre you choose will have a big impact on the look, feel and overall function of the rug.

There are plenty of material options to choose from, ranging from natural to manmade. Each material has a unique set of characteristics that should be considered before deciding which is right for you. Some common rug materials include:

  • Wool

  • Jute

  • Nylon

  • Polypropylene

  • Polyester

As with any material, there are pros and cons to be considered. With a bit of research, it’s easy to find the perfect rug for your needs. Below we will give you the rundown of the upsides and downsides to picking a polyester rug for your home.

Cost

⭐⭐⭐⭐✯

Rugs made from natural materials such as wool are often more expensive due to availability, cost of production and level of processing that goes into creating them. Synthetic materials such as polyester typically cost less and can offer great value for money.

This is because man-made rugs are cheaper to mass-produce to a high standard. Polyester is a versatile fibre so you can get plenty of textures and styles, each one with its own price tag. But overall polyester rugs are inexpensive to purchase.

Longevity

⭐⭐⭐⭐✯

Polyester is a non-absorbent and fast-drying material, which means that it is far less prone to mildew and mould. Due to the way it is dyed it’s also resistant to most chemicals as well as any fading from UV rays. This makes polyester a great option for those looking for a rug that is going to stand the test of time.

However, it does suffer from crimp loss. This issue is improving as the technology surrounding the industry develops over time - but most modern polyester rugs are still susceptible to trample marks.

Looks

⭐⭐⭐✯✯

Generally, polyester rugs look great. As technology develops it is getting harder to spot the difference between polyester rugs and those made of more expensive materials - although for the time being there is still a clear gap between the two in terms of looks.

Polyester rugs don’t crease or fade so they stay looking new for a long time, this makes them perfect for areas with high footfall. The way that polyester is dyed is both a blessing and a curse. Although it means the colours stay bright and bold over time, it also means that there is a limit on the colours available to those looking to source a rug made from this material.

Upkeep

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Keeping your polyester rug clean and well maintained is very straightforward. In fact, if you want a hassle-free rug then polyester is by far one of the best options out there.

It’s resistant to most cleaning chemicals (although, it is still best to check first) and as it’s non-absorbent, water-based spills and stains are easily removed - making them ideal for homes where little accidents are a common occurrence.

Oil-based stains are more of an issue, but still not the end of the world!

Environment

⭐✯✯✯✯

More and more environmentally savvy shoppers are becoming aware of the materials used in the products they purchase. This is arguably the biggest downfall of polyester.

As a man-made polymer, it isn’t very environmentally friendly. Polyester isn’t naturally biodegradable and can take up to 200 years to decompose - making it far from eco-positive, especially when compared to other materials such as wool.

However, there is some upside. We are starting to see more and more polyester rugs being made from 100% recycled material, removing a large part of the potential environmental damage they cause.

As polyester is long-lasting and resistant to stains, it also limits the need to replace your rug over time, which also limits the need to send these rugs to landfill. This is why it is so important to take the time to consider which rug is going to fulfil your needs but won’t fall out of favour over time.

As technologies develop this 1-star rating is sure to improve hugely!

Polyester Rugs: The Best Option for You?

Whether a polyester rug is right for you will depend widely on your individual needs and preferences. There are certainly a number of pros that make this rug material a winner - especially for those looking for a stylish, affordable rug that is resistant to wear and tear.

Use this guide to help you weigh up whether a polyester rug is the best option for you.
