How Can a Rug Improve your Home?

There are many reasons why you may choose to invest in a high quality rug for your home. Some people may be looking to purchase a shaggy rug for their living room, they may want a sisal rug for their kitchen or even a children's rug for their playroom. Whatever the reason you feel you need a rug, they have many benefits! In this article, I will go through some of the main benefits you will see when you place a rug in your home and try to convince you that a rug is what you need.

Easily Change your Colour Theme

When many people are thinking of purchasing a rug for their home, their number one reason for doing so is because they believe they can enhance the decor in their home already. This is true. You really can enhance the decor in your home by placing a complimentary rug down in the space. But what about if you want to go one step further? What about if you want to change the colour scheme completely in your room? Did you know rugs are great for this purpose as well?

Let's say you have a dark room already. Maybe the walls are painted dark grey, or there's dark hardwood flooring in the space. This can be great for a time, but as the years move on the space can start to feel dull and uninspiring! Why not brighten your space with a bright coloured rug? We have seen many of our customers do this in the past and it has worked so, so well in their spaces! And there's another benefit as well, it saves you the time and money of having to completely redecorate your space! You really can change the entire look and feel of a room, whether it's a living room, bedroom or kitchen by placing a rug down in your space. Still not convinced? Check out this amazing example!

The above example is the amazing contrast you can get when placing a dark coloured rug into a bright space! It immediately adds a layer of intrigue to the space and makes it much, much more dramatic! Moroccan rugs are just one example of a way you can improve the look and feel of your home with a rug, there are so many more options you can choose from as well!

Sound Absorption

Do you live in a noisy home? A noisy neighbourhood? You are not alone. Many people across the United Kingdom and the rest of the World struggle with noise pollution impacting their home life, and they've probably tried many things to get it to stop! The trouble is, there are so many things that contribute to noise getting in our homes that we don't know where to start getting the noise to stay away! Did you know a rug can help? Yes, we know, it is a little out there to suggest that, but they really can! Think of all the issues you have with:

  • Noisy neighbours.

  • Main roads.

  • High foot traffic.

  • Lorries driving past.

  • Loud music.

And all the other issues that come with living in a noisy part of town. Annoying, right? Rugs, especially high pile and shaggy rugs, can help absorb sound that gets into your home, meaning you don't suffer as much with the issue of noise keeping you awake at night, or annoying you during the day!

Zone Open Plan Living

Another reason rugs are great to be placed in the home is they give you the ability to zone off different areas if your home is designed with open plan living in mind. You can place a large area rug down in your living room to create this space, make use of a smaller sisal rug in the corner of a room to allow space for a dedicated home office, add in a dining room rug to separate off your dining room area as well. One of the downsides of having a home designed in the open plan style is it can sometimes be difficult to know where each space is. Rugs are an inexpensive way to solve this issue as you can invest in budget friendly ones.

Whilst there are a large number of designer rug options available, you absolutely do not need to go all out when purchasing rugs. Often, synthetic rugs are made with the same or a very similar quality to natural material rugs and they offer the same comfort at a lower level of cost. If you are looking to zone off areas of your open plan home, purchasing rugs made from nylon, polyester and polypropylene are great options to give your home a comfy look and feel whilst saving money as well! It really is a win win situation for all concerned.

I myself have a home that is open plan in the downstairs area and I can tell you from personal experience that rugs are a great way to segregate your space without having to spend large amounts of money building partitions. Of course, partitions can take away some of the beauty of an open plan living area as well so I wanted to avoid this solution at all costs. I may seem biased given I work for an online rug retailer, but I promise you this is an unbiased opinion.

Protect Valuable Hardwood Flooring

Another amazing benefit of using rugs throughout your home is you are able to reduce the damage done to expensive hardwood flooring in your home. Whilst hardwood flooring can look truly amazing when done well, it is also prone to scratches and damage done through everyday living. Children running around dropping their toys on the floor, pets running around using their claws for grip, glasses and plates being dropped (I am guilty of this) and many other things can cause damage to your flooring. Over time, not only can this become an eye-sore but it can also cost you a lot of money down the line. Especially if you want to sell your home. Prospective buyers and estate agents will view your property and mark it down if any flooring is damaged. This can cost you money on the home's sale value as you may have to settle for a lower price in order to get the home sold.

Rugs are an easy way to solve this issue, and the best part? It really does not matter if you would prefer a high pile rug or a rug with no pile at all! You can place a rug on your hardwood floor (bare in mind that you may need to also invest in some anti-slip underlay to stop the rug from moving) and the rug will be able to absorb all the high foot traffic and other incidents that cause issues with your hardwood flooring. Not only do rugs look amazing, but they serve a practical purpose too!

Suffer with Allergies? You NEED a Rug

I suffer with hay-fever, every single year. For years I was told that I needed to avoid placing a rug in my home because rugs trap allergens. Now, it turns out that rugs can actually help people with allergies BECAUSE they trap allergens. Think about it... If a rug traps allergens and keeps them within their pile, then they are stopped from being dispersed into the air where they can be breathed in. Hardwood flooring can cause an issue with this as there is no way for allergens to be kept within the flooring, meaning they are free to go and cause havoc in people with allergies like myself. Since I have placed rugs in my home, I have struggled less with my hay-fever in the peak months.
